Canelo will knockout Golovkin if the third fight happens, promises coach

Canelo Alvarez

The trainer of the middleweight champion and boxing star Canelo Alvarez believes if Canelo and Gennady Golovkin were to fight for the third time, it would end with a knockout victory for Canelo Alvarez and there would be no further debate over who is the greater fighter between the two, settling it once and for all.

“Without a doubt. If this fight happens, Canelo-Golovkin III, no doubt we’ll knock him out. We’ll look to take the fight to him like in the second one, from the start, try to push him back. But this time things are going to be very different. This time, we’re going to knock him out. That’s a promise to all the people who believe in us”

said Eddy Reynoso in a recent interview with ESPN Knockout.

Having fought twice already with Canelo handing Triple G his first professional career loss in their second fight, reports came out early in 2020 suggesting that the fighters would meet for the third time in the September of 2020 after Canelo’s super middleweight title bout against Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs). However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it is still not sure whether the fight will happen or not since Canelo had already delayed an announcement for May and the fight is looking likely to be pushed off to June from its original date 2nd May in Vegas.

Gennady Golovkin, now 38, holds the IBF and IBO middleweight championships and with the highest knockout to win ratio in middleweight history, the Kazakhstani boxer is widely considered one of the greatest middleweight boxers of all time and also the best middleweight in the world right now alongside rival Canelo Alvarez who is only 29 and in his prime.

Their first bout ended in a very controversial decision with the official decision being a split draw even though Golovkin outperformed Canelo in 10 of the 12 rounds according to Compubox. Therefore, a rematch seemed like the only way to decide the better fighter between the two. But the rematch had to be rescheduled from its original date because of Canelo’s suspension after testing positive for banned substances.

The rematch took place on September 15, 2018 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada with WBA (Super), WBC, IBO, The Ring middleweight titles on the line. In a very close bout, Canelo managed to get the majority decision by the judges and the fight was later also judged the fight of the year for 2018 by The Ring magazine.

Whatever the case, the legendary boxing trainer and 2019 trainer of the year Eddy Reynoso has promised Canelo would knock out Gennady Golovkin in a potential third fight that could happen very soon, regardless of whether the Saunders fight happens or not. The knockout would secure a second victory, cementing his legacy and finally end the debate according to the trainer.
